Bachtin, Levinas och en företagskonsult

If one were to translate Bakhtin´s perspective into cinematographic language, his camera would probably depict a dialogue in a way opposite to the familiar. He would zoom in on the listener while sounding out the speaker, and when the listener takes her turn to speak, the camera would focus on the one who now becomes the listener; in that way the entire dialogical sequence would be depicted. The listener becomes the speaker not because his or her silence suddenly begins to ‘speak’ – silence always already ‘speaks’ – but because here it is being acknowledged and heard.

Levinas criticizes the predominance of the Said, of Logos, which consists in the circulation of messages, a property that could be compared to the circulation of merchandise in a marketplace. Such a conceptualization of discourse, which according to him characterizes the majority of philosophical discussions, reduces communication to the problem of exchange, placing it in a universal context that precedes the individual. In this respect, the speech produced by the independent speaker portrayed in liberal thought might be seen as mired in the realm of the Said, a speech that emanates from the self only to return and reify the self, an unresponse-able speech.

Anekdot

För några år sedan satt jag på Vasa flygplats och läste By Way of Interruption när en man kom och satte sig bredvid mig. Efter en stund började jag känna mig obekväm eftersom han så tydligt iakttog mitt läsande. Efter ytterligare en stund började han prata med mig. Jag lyssnade artigt men blev samtidigt ännu lite mera irriterad över att han störde min läsning. Mannen berättade att han ursprungligen kom från Ghana men att han numera arbetade som företagskonsult i London. Och att han var glatt överraskad, för han hade också läst By Way of Interruption, och tyckte att den var en väldigt viktig bok. Dessutom hade han haft mycket nytta av den i sitt arbete. Misstänksamt som jag förhåller mig till företagskonsulter trodde jag att jag hade att göra med en bluffmakare. Men när han började kommentera och diskutera – med bättre kunskap än min – detaljer i By Way of Interruption förstod jag hur korkad jag var. Jag som alltid predikar att första intryck alltid ljuger.
